Kompetenzmonitor — Competency Tracking for Swiss Schools
Swiss schools are rethinking how they assess students. The traditional grade-centric model — a single number per subject — reduces a student's abilities to a pass-or-fail snapshot. It doesn't show what a student can actually do, where they're growing, or what comes next.
Progressive schools want to move to competency-based assessment: tracking specific skills and abilities across subjects, giving students a full picture of their strengths. The vision is clear. The tooling isn't.
No product on the market supports this model. Schools attempting the transition face hours of manual tracking — spreadsheets, paper lists, mental notes. Teachers spend time on administration instead of teaching. The result: a progressive idea stuck behind an analog bottleneck.
We started with one question: what would a teacher actually use between lessons, during class, at the end of the day?
The answer shaped every decision. No complex setup wizards. No feature bloat. A tool that works the way teachers already think — by student, by class, by subject.
We designed two core workflows: check off competencies per student (open a profile, tick what you observed) or per competency across a class (pick a skill, see who's achieved it). Both take seconds. Both feed into the same visual profile.
The architecture was built for Swiss schools from day one — multi-tenant isolation so every school's data stays completely separate, Swiss hosting for data residency, and a self-service onboarding flow that gets a school from registration to live tracking in under ten minutes.
Kompetenzmonitor is a web-based platform where teachers track student competencies in real time. The interface is built around three views:
Student Profile — A visual dashboard showing what a student has achieved, what's in progress, and what comes next. Pie charts break down competency levels, a timeline tracks growth over months, and teachers can drill into individual subjects.
Class Overview — Teachers see all students in a class at a glance, navigate to any profile in one click, and track overall class progress.
Competency Check-Off — The daily workhorse. Two modes: pick a student and check off what you observed, or pick a competency and mark which students demonstrated it. Observation notes optional. Mistakes are reversible with a documented revocation flow.
Schools manage themselves — admins configure subjects, competencies, classes, and teachers through built-in settings. A 4-step onboarding wizard gets new schools operational immediately. And when a student needs a portfolio for job applications, a single click generates a Bewerbungsprofil showing only achieved competencies.
Under the hood: Django handles authentication, permissions, and data integrity for sensitive student records. React delivers a fast, responsive interface that works on any device. PostgreSQL with row-level tenant isolation ensures no school ever sees another school's data. Docker and GitLab CI/CD automate testing and deployment — every update is tested before it reaches production.
Kompetenzmonitor launches its pilot with a Swiss school in April 2026 — the first platform purpose-built for competency-based assessment in Switzerland.
What the platform delivers from day one:
- A school goes from registration to live tracking in under 10 minutes
- Teachers check off competencies in seconds, not minutes of manual entry
- Every student gets a visual profile that shows abilities, not just grades
- Bewerbungsprofil export gives students a portfolio they can hand to employers
- Multi-tenant architecture scales from one school to hundreds without changes
This is the beginning. The next phase introduces automatic competency unlocking from grades — bridging the gap between traditional grading and competency tracking so schools can transition at their own pace.
